Task 1
Components of a digital camera
And equipment
What is manual
mode? Manual mode is a setting that you will find in DSLR cameras. This
type of setting requires you to adjust both the shutter speed and the aperture
by hand. This is mainly used for when you’re in a controlled environment
therefore the lighting stays the same/ doesn’t change willingly. An advantage
to using manual mode would be that you’re in complete control therefore there
are no surprises. Although a disadvantage to this mode would be that it may be
quite intimidating if you haven’t used it before.
What is automatic
mode? Automatic mode is the opposite of manual mode in the sense that with
manual mode you have to practically do everything by yourself whereas with
automatic mode you leave all the guess work to the camera. One advantage to
this would be that it takes stress off of you as you can leave all the work
such as the shutter speed to the camera. One disadvantage would be that as its
pretty much guess work you may not be happy with how the picture comes out.
Smartphone cameras. A lot have been
switching to smartphone cameras lately to take pictures instead of using actual
hand held cameras. The main reasons for this would be that phones are always at
our convenience and are easily carried around in our pockets whereas with a
camera you’d probably have to have a separate bag or its own holder. Another
one would be that as long as you have internet or a connection you can upload
and share your pictures whenever and wherever.
Viewfinder. Also
known as EVF, the viewfinder is specifically designed so that you are able to
see the captured image on the screen which is projected there electronically.
The main use for it is to improve and enhance the image that you’re trying to
capture by focusing the lens onto a specific part. An advantage for this would
be that it allows low light scenes seem brighter, not only that but it also
shows 100% coverage of the final image.
Lens. Overall the initial use of a lens is designed
to capture an image so that it is capable for storing an image electronically.
You are able to purchase different types of lenses such as fisheye lens, wide
angle, macro etc. for different purposes.
Image sensor. An
image sensor is something that collects information that brings together the
picture. Image sensors are used in all types of cameras both digital and
analogue.
Aperture. Aperture
is a hole in which the light can
enter. This means that the aperture determines whether the picture is exposed
to a lot of lighting or a little bit of lighting.
Shutter. A
shutter is also a hole that determines how much the image is exposed to light.
Although a shutter can also allow light to pass out of it.
Memory card. A
memory card is a small card that is placed into the device of which you are
using to take images or videos. The card allows you to save each image you have
taken to the card itself therefore allowing you to look back on it later.
Flash. A flash
is used on cameras to create an artificial light to illuminate the picture.
Another use to cameras with flash is that it quickly captures fast moving
objects.
Exposure. Exposure
is the amount of light per unit area and is determined by the shutter speed and
the lens aperture.
Colour,
temperature. Blue, red and green are the three colours that form white
light. When the temperature is high there’s a lot more blue light that exists
although when the temperature is low a lot more red light exists.
White balance. White
balance is a technique in the camera itself in which it corrects itself by
taking into account the temperature therefore when the temperature is high with
white balance the picture won’t come out as blue.
Hand held. Holding
a camera in your hands allows for greater freedom as you can go freely and move
with the camera, not only that but it’s at a convenience as you don’t need to
set anything up to use it.
Tripod. Tripods are used to hold the
camera when filming or taking pictures. They allow clearer shots as there is
less movement. With this you’re also able to get angles maybe you wouldn’t be
able to get if it was hand held.
